Temple Beth El University - “Superheroes and Judaism”
Join us at Temple Beth El from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on three consecutive Wednesdays, February 5, 12, 19. Rabbi Jonathan Freirich and Sara Bryan Markovits will present a multi-media exploration of the Jewish imagination’s expression into the realm of superheroes. From demon-conquering rabbis, the Golem, and the Dybbuk, to Superman, Batman, X-Men, Spiderman, and the Avengers; from hundred year folk tales told to frighten grandchildren, to modern comic books and graphic novels, to movies, TV shows, and contemporary fiction; from the Bible and the Talmud, to Hasidic tales, Shalom Aleichem, Jerry Siegel, Stan Lee, Michael Chabon, and J. J. Abrams; the supernatural and superhuman fascinate Jews of all ages and times.
The powerless understandably imagine what it would be like to have power - what is different and unique about Jews’ approaches to these ideas? As authors and purveyors of the original David and Goliath story we devote ourselves to justice in the face of bullies. Is there something quintessentially Jewish about these stories? Is there a superhero with no Jewish flavor at all? Come learn, discuss, explore - up, up, and away!
